Pyrosoma atlanticum sind pelagische und koloniale Salpen, die die Form einer Glocke oder eines dickeren Schlauch ausbilden.Die Salpen sind in der Lage, sich nach dem Rückstoßprinzip, Wasser wird durch Kontraktion des Mantels mit Druck ausgestoßen, zu bewegen, die Tiere lassen sich aber auch gern durch die Strömung im Wasser fortbewegen.

Der deutsche Name Feuerwalze wird auf die Fähigkeit der Biolumineszenz zurückgeführt, die von symbiotischen Endobakterien erzeugt werden.

Die Vermehrung der Tiere erfolgt sowohl geschlechtlich als auch ungeschlechtlich.

Garnelen der Gattung Funchalia wurden in Kolonien von Pyrosoma atlanticum gefunden. Auch Flohkrebse lebten dort, darunter die Hyperiidae Phronima und Phronimella spp.

Pyrosoma atlanticum ist ein wichtiges Beutetier für Fische, Wale und Meereschildkröten.
