Stramonita haemastoma ist eine räuberische Meeresschnecke, die sich an Austern und Miesmuscheln hält, aber auch Aas nicht verschmäht. Gefressen werden außerdem auch Napfschnecken und Seepocken.
Ihr spindelförmiges Gehäuse ist bräunlich, hellgrau oder weißlich, jedoch sehr oft mit Kalkalgen überwachsen. Das Gehäuse hat eine ovale Öffnung. Die Schnecke besitzt ein horniges Operculum zum Verschließen der Gehäuseöffnung.
Die Schnecke bevorzugt felsige Untergründe besonders in Gezeitenbereichen, weshalb sie auch als Felsenschnecke bezeichnet wird. Besonders auffällig sind ihre orange Färbung und die Zahnung am Mantelrand des Tiers.
Stramonita haemastoma gilt als eine der Hauptquellen für den Farbstoff Purpur in der Antike.
