Western Pacific to Indonesia, Samoa, Great Barrier Reef, Papua New guinea, Solomon
Islands, Pohnpei, and Palau; 10 cm; not uncommon
First collected in Samoa and was described upon four specimens but the describers did
not see any live individuals; divers find hard time to search this species in nature but
massive individuals are imported from Indonesia; some of them are too weak in
aquarium and die soon, and probably some collectors still use some poisons like cyanides;
some happy exceptions will survive more than a year in aquaria and accept foods, but at
first they are shy and retiring; I first found it, 5 cm long, at a dealer in Denpasar, Bali
and brought it back to Tokyo but it died within a week; some variants with an entirely
dark orange body can be seen, and it can change colors into normal coloration in a tank
within weeks
