Ophiocoma erinaceus can be found in the whole Indo-Pacific Ocean under rocks or among live or dead coral on reef flats and shallow fore reefs, locally often abundant. The color is aboral a uniform dark brown to black color, oral may be slightly lighter. Some individuals have a red tinge to the ventral arm plates and sometimes brilliant red tube feet and tentacles.
Ophiuroids of the genus Ophiocoma are very common on coral or rocky reefs throughout the tropics, they are difficult to identify and many historical records are inaccurate. Part of the problem has been the lack of distinctive morphological characters and the ability of some species to change colour pattern, from being consistently dark during the day to variegated at night. New taxonomic characters based around the shape of the oral and dental plates and their associated papillae. The three known species in the complex are distinguished and one of them are Ophiocoma erinaceus.
